Lewis Chester zoo blog 2020

Chester zoo

My name is Lewis, and I’m going to be telling you all about my experience at Chester Zoo. In Chester zoo we were first introduced to a worker named Mike. He took us around the Realm of The Red Ape area, which was very interesting. We got to see: gibbons, orangutang and also snakes. There was one snake(named Jodi) who was very unique. If you looked at the right angle you could see she had an iridescent colour around the edges of her skin. After we had explored this portion,  Mike showed us a game where you had to pretend you was a Hornbill(a very cool/endangered bird) and build a nest by covering a hole with nothing but our beaks  (plastic clippers)

We then went on to explore more of the zoo, the first animal we encountered was the cheetah, which didn’t really have much to offer as we didn’t see it run, which is their best trait. Next we discovered an animal which we’d never seen before. It looked like a mixture of a donkey and a zebra, it had the body of a donkey(but slightly bigger) but the stripes of a zebra on it’s legs. This animal turned out to be critically endangered, which made it even more of an interesting creature. To see something that there is barely anything of in the world is truly amazing.

Next we came across the giraffes(because our teacher/group leader would not stop talking about them as they are her favourite animal) . Which was one of the highlights of the trip as they were exceptionally funny. One of them was not eating the food but instead licking the wall and then went to eat the food, but then decided to lick the metal in which the food was held.It then looked at me as if to say “ what? Am I doing something wrong?” I hadn’t seen an animal this funny in a long time.

This was a great experience that I really enjoyed. Chester Zoo also decided to give our school a free trip(which was very kind of them) to show us around the zoo and also teach us and try and get the message out about sustainable palm oil. Sustainable palm oil is a type of oil that can only be grown in rainforests. But sustainable palm oil doesn’t hurt the environment or the animals that live there.
